STD/STI Testing
Many STD/STI’s have no obvious symptoms or if any, are very mild ones; therefore, it’s very important to learn about STD/STI’s. Yet no matter how minor the symptoms are, STD/STI’s can still be harmful to you and to your sexual partner(s). It’s important to seek treatment for sexually transmitted diseases as early as possible in order to restore your health as well as to stop the spread of the disease.
STD/STI Testing and Treatment
If you are sexually active, you should be tested for STD’s. Routine testing can be done with a urine sample and blood sample. A physical exam is not necessary unless you are having symptoms that need evaluated by a doctor such as a rash or skin irritation.
STD/STI Testing FAQ
When Should I Get Tested for a STD/STI?
You should get STD testing if you are having symptoms (ex: discharge, painful urination, etc.), if you recently had a new sexual partner, or if a previous partner tests positive for an infection. You should also be tested if you were sexually active in the past but did not receive any screening at that time.
Does a Condom Protect You from STD/STIs?
While condoms help prevent the spread of STD/STIs, they are not 100% effective. Condoms can slip or break during use. There are also some STD’s that are spread through skin contact by areas not covered by the condom. You can get STD/STIs from engaging in oral, vaginal, and anal sex.
