Abortion Information
At Obria Medical Clinics, we understand that pregnancies are not always a happy surprise. You may feel overwhelmed, anxious, angry, or confused. No matter your situation, the staff at Obria Medical Clinics will give you the professional, non-judgmental care you need. If you want a safe place to discuss all your pregnancy options, our staff is here for you. If you have already decided what your plan is for this pregnancy, Obria Medical Clinic can provide you with important medical care before your abortion procedure. Obria Medical Clinics do not perform abortion procedures nor prescribe the abortion pill. There are several reasons you may want to schedule an appointment with Obria Medical Clinic before an abortion.
- Verify that you are pregnant: It is possible to have a false positive pregnancy test at home. Many people accidentally use the test incorrectly or read it at the wrong time. Also, if you have a chemical pregnancy (a very early miscarriage), you may have multiple positive pregnancy tests followed by a negative test.
- Confirm the pregnancy is viable: About one in six pregnancies end on their own. That means many women wanting an abortion won’t need one. The best way to check for viability is an ultrasound. If you are too early for an ultrasound, checking hCG levels (a pregnancy hormone) may show if you are miscarrying. It is also important to screen for ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy is where an embryo implants outside of the uterus. These are rare (about 1% of pregnancies) but require immediate medical attention when they are found.
- Check for vaginal infections: Many sexually transmitted diseases do not have any symptoms. If you have an abortion while you have one of these infections, it could lead to future fertility problems. It is best to be tested a few days before the abortion to make sure you do not have an infection.
- Determine how far along you are: The type of abortion you can get depends on how far along you are. You may schedule an appointment for a medical abortion (also called the abortion pill) but find out that you are too far along to take it. Many facilities will only perform abortion up to a certain number of weeks gestation.
- Ask questions: Many women need a place to explore all their options regarding pregnancy. Our staff is happy to answer questions about medical and surgical abortion procedures, risks and side effects of abortion, when abortion is legal in Iowa, or any other questions you may have.
We realize that choosing to have an abortion can be a hard decision and some individuals regret their abortion shortly after taking the first abortion pill. We want you to know that if you change your mind after taking the first abortion pill, but before taking the second pill, it may be possible to reverse the abortion. If you find yourself in this situation, please reach out to us as soon as possible. Call our clinic at 515-620-5892 (answered during business hours) or 877-558-0333 (answered 24/7).
